Zometa, generically known as Zoledronic acid or zoldedronate, is a bisphosphonate used to treat serious skeletal fractures in cancer patients and in those suffering from osteoporosis. It is alternatively known as Zomera, Alclasta, and Reclast. All of these brands are produced by the pharmaceutical giant Novartis. Additionally, it is occasionally used to prevent recurring hip fractures. It has been approved for patients with Paget's disease of bone, and more recently, for the treatment of women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Unfortunately, like similar drugs such as Fosamax, Zometa has some very serious side effects. The most significant Zometa adverse effects include osteocronosis of the jaw, which has been the target of the bulk of Zometa litigation. However, other Zometa side effects include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Anemia

  • Swelling Extremities

  • Acute Renal fialure

  • Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a condition in which the bone tissue in the jaw does not heal after minor trauma. As one can infer from the name, osteonecrosis is sometimes called dead jaw, because the bone in the jaw dies.

After a patient has been diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the jaw, expensive and time-consuming treatments will have to be administered. In the most severe cases, the affected bone has to be surgically removed in a painful operation.

If you or a loved one has been afflicted by osteonecrosis of the jaw, or by any other serious side effects, this Zometa law firm would like to help.
