Propecia, which is generically known as Finasteride and is also alternatively sold as Proscar, is a drug used to treat male pattern baldness, a form of hair loss that afflicts one in three men. The drug was released under the name Propecia in 1997, by Merck & Co. Studies have actually shown that it is quite effective at reducing or reversing hair loss. However, there are some very serious Propecia side effects, which have caused people to file Propecia lawsuits.

Most of these lawsuits have concerned Propecia's tendency to cause sexual dysfunction. In 2011, three law firms filed a Propecia class action lawsuit, and later that year, another plaintiff also filed a lawsuit accusing Merck of failing to sufficiently reveal the potentially devastating side effects of Finasteride. Finasteride falls into the class of drugs callsed 5-alpha Reductase Inhibitors.

There are many Propecia adverse effects, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Prostate Cancer

  • Erectile Dysfunction

  • Diminished Libido

  • Male Breast Cancer

  • Teratogenicity

  • Impotence

Merck has, however, denied that that Propecia causes severe long-term side effects. For example, it has claimed that Propecia sexual dysfunction will recede after discontinuation of use. However, a number of studies have shown this to be untrue: Propecia and Proscar side effects may last for ever, and they may even cause impotence.

The FDA has also placed warnings on Propecia about its increased propensity to cause prostate cancer. This field of inquiry is still very much debated, but there is a potential that prostate cancer might be caused or exacerbated by Propecia.

Furthermore, an English study has revealed that Propecia might have some relationship to male breast cancer. However, it is unclear to to how large of a dose will actually cause male breast cancer.

If you or one of your loved ones has had serious sexual side effects or has developed cancer as a result of taking Propecia, you might be entitled to compensation.
