Lariam, which is generically known as Melfoquine, is an anti-malaria drug often prescribed to travelers and US military personnel. Like some other Malaria drugs, Lariam has serious psychological side effects linked to it, including serious hallucinations and suicide. Lariam was developed by the US military, but has been marketed by Hoffman-La Roche to the civilian population. It is still used by the military, but is, along with a number of other commonly prescribed drugs, under review after the Robert Bales massacre of 17 Afghan civilians.

Although it is not clear whether or not Robert Bales, the murderer of 17 Afghan civilians, was prescribed to Lariam at the time of his heinous deeds, the US military initiated a review of the drug immediately after the incident. Additionally, the US military has formally banned the drug for soldiers who have already suffered traumatic brain injuries.

The drug is dangerous because it causes serious psychological symptoms in roughly one third of the cases in which it is prescribed. Some indication that the adverse effects of Lariam are present include:

  • Depression
  • Confusiona
  • Anxiety
  • Hallucinations
  • Suicidal Ideation

If you believe you have been experiencing adverse reactions, you should probably contact your doctor and attempt to get prescribed to an alternate medication.

Whether you are a civilian or a member of the armed forces, if you or a loved one has been seriously injured as a result of taking Lariam, you might be eligible for compensation, which a Lariam law firm can help you secure.
