Ketek, or Telithromycin, is a recently approved antibiotic drug, which is meant to treat mild and moderate respiratory infections. The makers of Ketek have had to add additional warnings to the drug after the FDA decided that there was enough evidence that Ketek had serious side effects. Of the Ketek side effects, the most dangerous one is serious liver damage.
In fact, the FDA had originally blocked its use in 2001 (it was approved in Europe during that year) and demanded more safety information. When this purported information was furnished, the drug was approved in 2004.
The FDA has data on at least four deaths that have resulted as a result of liver complications arising from Ketek (usually liver failure). Twelve total cases of liver failure have been reported to the FDA. Certain independent analysts have concluded that the rate of death is even higher (one has reported that at least 18 people have died as a result of Ketek).
Furthermore, patients with Mysathenia Gravis should not take Ketek as could further exacerbate that condition. Ketek also has more mild side effects including head aches and rashes.
