Jalyn is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, or 5-ARI, class drug that is used to treat enlarged prostates in men. Jalyn contains a combination of two drugs: dutasteride and tamsulosin. Dutasteride is sold by itself as Avodart and tamsulosin is sold by itself as Flomax. Dutasteride is, of the two drugs in the combination therapy, the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Jalyn is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.
In June 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had order that all 5-alpha reductase inhibitor manufacturers include a warning label on their medications that would warn potential patients about the risk of developing high-grade prostate cancer. Men taking Jalyn are at a much higher risk of developing aggressive prostate tumors than are those men who had been taking a placebo in a certain study.
Health Canada has done a significant amount of research on another 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, Finasteride. It found that men who were taking the 5mg variant of the drug were at significantly higher risk of developing cancer. While it is not clear whether all 5-alpha reductase inhibitors have the same risk of cancer associated with them, the findings should be taken very seriously be anybody planning to undergo this combination therapy.
The other significant Jalyn adverse effects pertain to its ability to cause impotence and other forms of sexual dysfunction. 5-alpha Reductase Inhibitors are known to cause erectile dysfunction, decreased sex drive or libido, and decreased amount of semen.
