Aricept is Pfizer's brand name for the drug Donepezil, which was developed by the Japanese pharmaceutical conglomerate Eisai. It is used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Aricept was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996, and it quickly became one of the world's best-selling Alzheimer's medications. Generic versions of Aricept became available in November 2010. These generic formulations are manufactured by Ranbaxy Labs and Wockhardt. Researchers are currently investigating whether or not Aricept might have some other uses, aside of treating Alzheimer's.

The unfortunate thing about Aricept is that it just doesn't seem to work. There is not definitive proof that Aricept alters the course of Alzheimer's; instead, it just provides small benefits in cognition and behavior. Fortunately, many groups are catching onto the uselessness of this drug. For example, the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence withdrew its recommendations for this drug in 2005. As a result, this drug's license was pulled in the United Kingdom.

Even Eisai's own clinical studies have shown that patients taking this drug are more likely to die than are those taking a placebo. Of 974 patients with dementia, 11 of those taking Aricept met an untimely demise; whereas, none of those taking the placebo succumbed to fatal side effects. Even though Eisai conducted this study, its spokespeople claimed that there was no risk in prescribing this drug.

If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of taking Aricept, an Aricept law firm might be able to help you get the compensation that you deserve. Contact our unsafe drug attorneys today to schedule a free and confidential case consultation.
