Recalled Products
In the United States a variety of government agencies initiate recalls if they believe that products are unsafe for use by the public. The primary groups that initiate these recalls are the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which oversees most consumer products; the Department of Transportation, which recalls vehicles; and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which initiates recalls of infected food and bad drugs.
Unfortunately, each year thousands of items are recalled, including bad drugs, sporting equipment, toys, medical devices, automobiles, clothing, tools, and baby furniture. The reasons for these recalls vary, but in every case, the underlying motive for the recall is to protect consumers from dangerous products. Some products like baby toys with loose parts are obviously not dangerous to adults, but are very dangerous to infants who put everything in their mouths.
Furthermore, recalled products are dangerous because, oftentimes, the majority of the products are never returned. It is hard to inform all consumers about a recall, and, as such, many consumers never realize that the products they are using are defective. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, the recent Toyota recall was very well publicized.
Products are defective for a variety of reasons, but generally some degree of carelessness or negligence is responsible for the defective product. Either the designer of the product did not conduct sufficient testing or the manufacturer cut corners and thus crafted an inferior, and dangerous, product.
Some retailers continue to sell recalled products, especially if those retailers are re-sale outlets. Furthermore, many customers buy items with cash and thus are impossible track down once the recall has been initiated.
Recalled products are dangerous because every year they are responsible for a number of deaths. These deaths are usually caused by car accidents, dangerous toys, or dangerous drugs.
