Alli is an over-the-counter version of the drug Orlistat. Alli is marketed by the Philadelphia-based company GlaxoSmithKline. Orlistat is also known as tetrahydrolipstatin. Alli is an anti-obesity drug that reduces caloric intake in humans by preventing the absorption of fat from food. Clinical studies have proven that Alli will help promote weight loss, but the amount of weight loss is generally rather modest. It is also claimed that Alli reduces blood pressure and helps prevent Type 2 Diabetes; however, the supererogatory benefits may simply arise from having a healthier body weight. The danger of Alli is that is might cause serious adverse effects, such as kidney damage, liver damage and liver failure.

Researchers in Canada have found that people who use Alli are more likely to develop kidney problems than those who do not use it. Approximately 2 percent of people taking Alli will develop kidney problems according to this study.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has researched the effects of Alli, after having approved it in 2007. In 2010, it has mandated the inclusion of  a warning label on the packages of Alli and Xenical to mention that possibility of developing serious liver injury.

Researchers have been looking into the possibility that Alli, and other Orlistat drugs, might cause cancer. However, research in this direction is not yet conclusive. Although, there does appear to be some correlation between Orlistat use and breast cancer.

If you or a loved one has been injured, especially with severe liver complications or cancer, an Alli law firm can help you secure the compensation that you rightly deserve. Contact one of our unsafe drug lawyers today to schedule a free and confidential case consultation.
