Multaq is a drug made by Sanofi-Aventis to treat irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmias). Most people who take this drug only take it for a relatively short period of time, 22 to 30 months. Yet, the Multaq side effects are very serious and are occasionally fatal.

Multaq is, however, quite dangerous and has been known to cause serious liver complications. In fact, the FDA has issued a black box warning for Multaq, which states the following:

"Warning: Heart failure: Multaq is contraindicated in patients with NYHA Class IV heart failure, or NYHA Class II–III heart failure with a recent decompensation requiring hospitalization or referral to a specialized heart failure clinic. In a placebo-controlled study in patients with severe heart failure requiring recent hospitalization or referral to a specialized heart failure clinic for worsening symptoms (the ANDROMEDA Study), patients given dronedarone had a greater than two-fold increase in mortality. Such patients should not be given dronedarone."

The aforementioned warning pertains to the increased chance of death occurring as a result of exacerbating the symptoms, which Multaq is meant to treat. However, the FDA has also issued a warning to medical professionals about the liver damaging capacities of Multaq.

Some other side effects of Multaq also include rashes, stomach pains, slow heart beat, possible trouble breathing, and rapid weight gain.
